Resilience during Lock Down.
“First thing to acknowledge is that everyone is in this together: everyone is affected by this and everyone WILL get through it by sticking together. Trying to stay positive in the current climate is a challenge for many people but everyone can and should acknowledge something good &/or positive that they have done each day and physically keep a note of it.
Secondly, make sure you prioritise connecting with your team like never before. Take time to show a genuine interest in how your people and their families are. Show a more vulnerable, personal you. This is critically important for business owners who have colleagues and employees. These people would be well advised to contact their people every week to check on how they and their families are doing and approach it from a human perspective rather than being the boss. As for staying connected ourselves, it is really important that we do this with friends and family.
Showing vulnerability brings people closer together and builds trust, the bedrock of holding things together in disrupting challenging times. I know that we Brits are renowned for having a “stiff upper lip” but it really is NOT a sign of weakness to let those around you know how you are really feeling as opposed to sticking to the same script of “we are fine thanks: Business as usual…”
Don’t be afraid to embrace diverse thinking and actively encourage different opinions to be aired. This is messy but healthy! You don’t want to create more anxiety that is for sure but a healthy debate to help think things through extensively by including different people is a good thing. In fact some would argue that they are holding meetings now which are far more productive because people are not just saying “yes” all the time.
Hold people to account for not doing what they said they were going to or behaving in a way that isn’t helpful. This is an individual and collective responsibility to ensure that things move forward and progress. Without anyone holding others to account, things can easily slip and remain stagnant.
Have one singular rallying cry for the whole organisation which wraps up together how to cope, survive and thrive. This is the moment to pull everyone together, provide that clarity of thought and vision and bring everyone with you.
Commit to all of the above, persevere and this will make a massively positive difference that will help develop individual and collective resilience.
